Stonewall Jackson's Wife Archive, 6 Pcs: "when we meet there I trust we may bring our own beloved Husbands with us"

A small archive of material relating to Mary Anna Jackson (1831-1915), the wife of Confederate General Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson (1824-1863). The lot is comprised of: a 2pp autograph letter signed by Mary B. Doolittle of New York City; a 5pp autograph letter signed by Mary Anna Jackson; two original transmittal envelopes; and two contemporaneous newspaper clippings. The archive dates from ca. 1908-1911. In very good to near fine condition. Please refer to catalog photos for additional remarks about condition.

Mary Anna Jackson, the second wife of Thomas J. Jackson, married him in July 1857. Stonewall was mortally wounded by friendly fire following the Battle of Chancellorsville on May 2, 1863. Shot three times, his left arm was amputated and he died of pneumonia on May 10, 1863, with Mary Anna at his bedside. Mary Anna was known popularly as the "Widow of the Confederacy." This moniker was derived both from the high profile of her dead husband, but also in consideration of the extraordinary length of time--51 years--that she survived Stonewall. Mary Anna Jackson was very active in the Confederate veteran community. She shared her and her husband's correspondence and published "Memoirs of Stonewall Jackson by His Widow" (Louisville, Kentucky, The Prentice Press, 1895.)

The lot consists of:

1. A 2pp autograph letter signed by Mary B. Doolittle, written in Walter's Park [possibly in Pennsylvania, site of the Walter Sanitarium] in July 1908. Expected wear including toning, and paper folds, some brittle or with closed tears. Isolated areas of acid burn, else very good. 5.75" x 8.25."

In part:

"Dear Mrs. '(Stonewall)' Jackson:

With Emerson I can say 'My friends come to me + the Great God gave them to me' -- and I feel grateful to Him for bringing the sunshine of your sweet friendship into my life.

I trust that we may sometime meet here again before we meet in the Home of the Redeemed. And when we meet there I trust we may bring our own beloved Husbands with us…"

2.-3. A 5pp autograph letter signed by Mary Anna Jackson as "Mary A. Jackson" on the fifth page. Written at Jackson's home in Charlotte, North Carolina on February 24, 1909. Inscribed on bifold and single sheet stationery. Expected wear including paper folds, overall toning, and isolated acid burn, with Doolittle's pencil inscription at the bottom of the last page. Else near fine. 5.125" x 6.375." The letter is accompanied by its original transmittal envelope engrossed by Jackson, postmarked from Charlotte, North Carolina. Bearing a cancelled stamp and neatly letter-opened at the top.

Mary Anna consoled Doolittle following the recent death of the latter's husband, Belred, writing: "…my heart went out to you in loving sympathy and affection, for we have both been tried in the same school of sorrow and bereavement…"

Mary Anna adds that her "big grandson came home from West Point last summer, and we had a charming family reunion. He is studying well and will graduate in 1910. He expects to go with the Corps to attend Taft's inauguration next week…"

Mary Anna was referring to Thomas Jonathan Jackson "Jack" Christian, Sr. (1888-1952), the only son of her daughter Julia Laura Jackson Christian (1862-1889). Christian, Sr. would in fact graduate from West Point as a member of the Class of 1911. Afterward, he served overseas in the Philippines and along the U.S. / Mexico border before undertaking domestic assignments during World War I and World War II. He was eventually promoted to Brigadier General. All told, three generations of Jackson males graduated from West Point: Thomas J. Jackson in 1846; Christian, Sr. in 1911; and Thomas Jonathan Jackson Christian, Jr. (1915-1944), in 1939.

4. An envelope inscribed in Mary B. Doolittle's hand as "Letter from Mrs. Jackson of Charlotte N.C. - alias the brilliant wife of Gen. 'Stonewall' Jackson of the Confederacy." Expected wear including small closed tears.

5.-6. Two contemporaneous newspaper clippings, including a portrait of Mary Anna Jackson, and an article from the June 15, 1911 "Tribune" entitled "Who Shot Stonewall Jackson / Another Confederate Veteran Credited / with Deed Passes Away." Expected wear including toning.
