The document is inscribed in various secretarial hands on blue-ruled pale blue bifold stationery. Also signed by Jackson's colleagues: 2nd Lieutenant J.B. Fry on the first page, and Captain Francis Taylor on the second page. The third page is blank and the fourth page is docketed for filing. Expected wear including paper folds, wrinkles, and a few minor chipped edges and stains. Several small tears not affecting any text. Mounting tabs found on the fourth page. An earlier dealer's annotation in pencil, including an arrow indicating where Jackson has signed. Else very good to near fine. 8.5" x 10.75". Accompanied by a print of Jackson in military uniform. Light scattered stains, else near fine, 5.3875" x 7.3875".

The orders state in part, with untouched spelling and punctuation:

"A Board of Survey to consist of 1st Lt Jackson + 2d Lt Fry (1st Ary-) will meet today to examine a quantity of hard bread, recently issued to 'co. K' 1st Arty by the commissary at Jalapa…

The Board met pursuant to the above order and examined 196lbs of bread, which they find entirely unfit for use + therefore recommend that it be thrown away, and that the commissary at this place or elsewhere supply the amount thus lost to the commissary (Light Co. K 1st Ary) -

The bread was found by the board to be mouldy…"

On the second page, superior officer Captain Francis Taylor directed that the rotting bread be replaced.

Thomas Jonathan “Stonewall” Jackson was a Virginia-born West Point graduate whose first military service was in the Mexican-American War (1846-48). As a member of the 1st U.S. Artillery Regiment, he participated in the Siege of Veracruz (March 1847) and the battles of Contreras (August 1847), Chapultepec (September 1847), and Mexico City (September 1847). Jackson's war service was recognized with a series of two brevet promotions and the rank of 1st Lieutenant.

Jackson garnered his famous sobriquet “Stonewall” during the Civil War's First Battle of Manassas, where he inspired Confederate resistance against Union troop advances. Jackson continued to perform brilliantly in military campaigns throughout 1862. The night of the Confederate victory at Chancellorsville on May 2, 1863, Jackson was hit by friendly fire while meeting with a staff member. Gravely wounded, “Old Blue Light” died just a little over a week later of complications. Jackson's old Mexican-American War comrade J.B. Fry--the co-signee of this document--served the Union during the Civil War.
