Stephen Crane Rare ALS, an Invitation for a Double Date in 1891

Autograph Letter Signed, "Stephen Crane", 2pp, on Delta Upsilon House stationery, 5.25" x 7.25", Syracuse, "March 7th at 7.00 P.M." Sheets are mounted to lightweight boards, the larger of which is 6.25" x 9.75". Flattened mailing folds with minor separation at edges. Mounting adhesive on verso shows through to recto, not affecting legibility of text. Discoloration and scattered foxing, else in very good condition.

In Crane's attractive hand, the letter in full: "My dear Miss Yates / I hope you will pardon this superlative amount of assurance I seem to possess, in thus venturing with pen and ink; but finding myself unable to call in season before Wednesday next, I trusted that you would not feel offended at 'these few lines.' If you will give me the pleasure of attending with me the rendition of the 'Stabat Mater' at the musical festival next Wednesday evening in company with Miss Taylor and Mr. Goodwin I will be grateful. Hoping that I may have the honor I am very truly yours."

Letters by Crane are extremely rare, as he died at the very young age of 29, and this is the only example that we can find penned on fraternity letterhead during his brief attendance at Syracuse University for one semester in 1891.

Stephen Crane (1871-1900) was an American poet, novelist, and short story writer. Crane began writing at the age of four and had several articles published by the age of sixteen. Having little interest in university studies, though he was active in a fraternity, he left Syracuse University in 1891 to work as a freelance journalist and writer in New York City. Prolific throughout his short life, he wrote notable works in the Realist tradition as well as early examples of American Naturalism and Impressionism. His first novel, Maggie: A Girl of the Streets, was published in 1893, followed in 1895 by the novel for which he is best known, The Red Badge of Courage. He is recognized by modern critics as one of the most innovative writers of his generation.
