States Rights Gist (1831-1864). Autograph Document Signed, "S. R. Gist", as Adjutant General, 1p, on ruled stationery of the Adjutant & Inspector General's Office, 7.375" x 9.688", Charleston, South Carolina, May 2, 1861. Flattened folds with 1.5" separation at right of first horizontal fold. Small loss at bottom right corner, not affecting text. Scattered foxing and light edge toning. Minor soiling, with adhesive residue along left edge recto and right edge verso. Overall, in very good plus condition.

Gist's handwritten "General order No. 71" reads, in full: "1. Lieut. Alfred Rhett is herewith promoted to be Captain in the Battalion of Artillery, since S. D. Lee resigned. 2. Lieut. J. A. Sitgreaves to be Junior 1st Lieut. in same Battalion - each to take rank from the 28th April last - Adj. Genl. of the S.C. Army will extend this order. "

Gist was born in Union, South Carolina, and was a graduate of South Carolina College and Harvard University Law School. An attorney in his home state, he became active in the militia, and rose to Confederate Brigadier General during the American Civil War. Gist was killed at the Battle of Franklin on November 30, 1864, while leading his troops on foot, becoming one of six Confederate generals to die as a result of the fight. He was named after the Southern states' rights doctrine of nullification, reflecting the political beliefs of his father, Nathaniel Gist, a follower of John C. Calhoun.

Alfred M. Rhett (1829-1889) was educated at Harvard, class of 1850, after which he became a rice planter in South Carolina. A controversial Confederate artillery officer, Rhett killed a West Point-educated relative of John C. Calhoun, William R. Calhoun, his commanding officer at the Charleston harbor fortifications, in a duel on September 5, 1862. Rhett later served as the chief of municipal police in Charleston, as South Carolina state constable, and as a justice of the peace.

Stephen Dill Lee (1833-1908) graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1854, briefly serving with the Army during the Seminole Wars and in the west before the American Civil War broke out. He first entered the Confederate army as an aide-de-camp and captain for General P. G. T. Beauregard. When Beauregard began organizing companies of artillery, Lee was given command of one, and was promoted through the ranks, ultimately to lieutenant general in June of 1764, becoming the youngest person to hold that rank in the Confederate Army. His commands included a battery of guns under General Joseph E. Johnston and a battalion of artillery under General James Longstreet. After the war, Lee became the first president of Mississippi State University from 1880 to 1899. Late in life, Lee was the commander-in-chief of the United Confederate Veterans.

Julius A. Sitgreaves (1840-1912) was born in Rockhill, South Carolina. A veteran of the Confederacy, Sitgreaves was captain of the company credited with firing the first shot in the American Civil War at the onset of the battle for Fort Sumter. After the war, he went to New York and became an editor and market writer for the Press News Association.
