Description:

White Stanford 1853 - 1906

Stanford White discusses the Plaza entrance to Prospect Park with MacMonnies.

One typed page on stationary stock addressed to Frederick William MacMonnies, on the firm's letterhead of "McKim, Mead & White". Dated January 21, 1895, and signed by Stanford White as "McKim, Mead White". 8" x 10.5". Expected folds, faint handling marks, ink scribble to front lower left, outside of margin, and small ink marks verso.

Stanford White types a letter to MacMonnies, who at the time was the best known expatriate American sculptor of the Beaux-Arts school, about an error made in the design and construction of the Prospect Park pillars which "were not built according to the drawing which Park Commissioner Squier sent you. The plinths upon which your bronze eagles are to rest are somewhat larger than were shown on the first drawing" White was referring to the pillars that are still present today at the entrance to the park, which although first built in 1894, were revised and not fully completed with the eagles added until 1902. Somewhat of a scolding, chastising letter as White signs the letter as "McKim, Mead White", instead of his more typical "Affectionately Stanford White", and also refers to him very formally as "Dear Sir", instead of "Dear Mac" or 'My Dear Mac".

More than a century later, the pillars are still considered a noteworthy landmark and admired for their grandiose uniqueness.
