ALS

Stanford White (1853-1906). An autograph letter by American Beaux-Arts architect Stanford White while on travels in Europe with his wife Bess, signed "SW" and addressed to Anais Casey. 4p bifolium, recto and verso, 4.5" x 7.25", written en route from Nuremburg to Wurzburg in Germany, August 3, 1884. Also retained is the original mailing envelope in White's hand. Shows expected mail folds, some of which are beginning to split at the edges, light toning, else fine.

The bubbly letter recounts their European voyage with humorous detail. It reads in full:

"Dear Anais,

I wonder where you are and where this will reach you - we are now on the way from Nuremburg to Heidleburg [sic] - having just come from Bayreuth - where we stopped to the performances of Parsifal - it was wonderful

(p2) + we were duly impressed + have come away thoroughly saturated with Wagner. We left Italy rather sooner than we expected - as I did not relish the possible idea of being locked up in a pest house by the border quarantine - we went to the Engardine where it is cool + lovely amongst the high alps + then drove over the Munster pass down the lovely valley of the Adige into

(p3) the Tyrol we had a private post + pair + a coachman in fine Tyrolean rig - post from + all + were generally very gay - While in Tyrol at Brixen - we called on the Baron + Baroness Schonberg (she was the Wards daughter) They live in a rentable old Castle - with a moat - drawbridge + haunted character. We went however as very simple bodies in our travelling rig + were ushered into the drawing room + forthwith introduced to Lady Clair

(p4) - Lady Deser - Lady Howard - Countess of Pembroke ect. + by the time it was all through with I was looking cross eyed at the ceiling - and Bess for some convenient gloom to retire into forever - We managed to pull through without disgracing our country - but we felt very weak afterward - we really had a delightful visit - you cannot imagine how lovely the country is around there - we are on our way to England now - sailing on the 30th so I may see you before long Bess sends love - and I have written this in the car so you must revile me for my handwriting. You must remember us both more kindly to Miss Reynal Believe me as always. ever yrs SW."
