Archive

An archive of majority-autographed material from five members of Spanish royalty from the Houses of Hapsburg and Bourbon, including: Philip IV, King of Spain; his wife (and niece) Mariana, Queen of Spain; Philip IV's daughter Maria Teresa, Infanta of Spain; and Philip IV's daughter Margarita Maria Teresa, Infanta of Spain (the one exception, secretarial); and Isabella II, Queen of Spain. The autograph letters signed, secretarially signed letter, and partly printed partly manuscript document signed range in date from April 17, 1653 to January 31, 1855. Various places including Madrid, San Lorenzo, and Aranjuez, Spain. Please refer to catalog photos for additional information related to condition, which is overall very good. The framed piece measures 15.25" x 10.75" x 1." The lot is accompanied by four color print-outs of the Royal Coat of Arms of Spain, 1580-1668, 8.5" x 11."

Multiple pieces of this lot were addressed to the Countess of Salvatierra. The Count of Salvatierra was a 17th C. hereditary title in the Spanish peerage.

The lot is comprised of:

- A 1p manuscript letter bearing the secretarial signature of Margarita Maria Teresa (1651-1673), Infanta of Spain and later Holy Roman Empress, Queen of Germany, Hungary, and Bohemia, and Archduchess of Austria, as "Margarita Maria" at center right. (It is believed that Margarita dictated the letter but did not write or sign it.) N.d., n.p. Inscribed on watermarked bifold paper. Blank inner pages and outer leaf. Expected wear including flattened transmittal folds. Isolated darkening and foxing to edges, else near fine. 5.875" x 8.125."

Margarita Maria Teresa dictated the following message to an unnamed recipient, probably the Countess of Salvatierra, in part:

"Dearest of my heart, of my soul, of my eyes, and of my life. My mother has a headache and I really deplore it. I am very lonesome without you… My sister and I spent some time on the balcony today… Father Fray Antonio came yesterday…"

- A 1p autograph letter signed by Philip IV (1605-1665), King of Spain, as "yo El Rey" in the left column towards the bottom. April 17, 1653. Aranjez, Spain. Inscribed on the left side of watermarked bifold paper. Docketed verso. Blank inner pages and outer leaf. Expected wear including flattened transmittal folds and minor weathering on the outer page. Else near fine. 8.375" x 12."

Responding to a letter from the Countess of Salvatierra about the health of his youngest daughter, Margarita Maria Teresa, Philip IV writes in part: "… I learned that my daughter's health has improved, for which I thank God… the Queen has a mild headache…"

- A 1p autograph letter signed by Maria Teresa (1638-1683), Infanta of Spain and later Queen of France, as "Maria Teresa" at center right. October 10, 1653. Diocese of San Lorenzo, Spain. Inscribed on watermarked bifold paper. Blank inner pages and outer leaf. Expected wear including flattened transmittal folds and a few extra wrinkles. The top corners of the first and last pages are attached. Else near fine. 5.875" x 8.25."

Maria Teresa, possibly writing to the Countess of Salvatierra, conveyed her personal news, and inquired after her younger half-sister, la Infanta Margarita Maria Teresa.

- A 1p autograph letter signed by Mariana (1634-1696), Queen of Spain, as "yo la Reyna" in the left column towards the bottom. October 27, 1653. Diocese of San Lorenzo, Spain. Inscribed on the left side of watermarked bifold paper. Docketed verso. Blank inner pages and outer leaf. Expected wear including flattened transmittal folds. An isolated minor closed tear in the upper left corner. Else near fine. 8.375" x 12."

Mariana wrote in response to a letter from the Countess of Salvatierra: "Your absence is becoming unbearably long. Today I did not go out because the day was not nice but I went to the convent…"

- A 1p partly printed and partly manuscript document signed by Isabella II (1830-1904), Queen of Spain, as "Yo la Reyna" at lower right. January 31, 1855. Palace of Madrid, Madrid, Spain. The document thanks Reverend Father Luis Amat for his Easter wishes. On paper. Matted and framed behind glass. Not examined out of the frame. Expected wear including flattened transmittal folds, else near fine. The frame has a small area of loss towards the backing at lower right. The sight size of the signed document is approximately 10" x 5.5" while the overall framed size is 15.25" x 10.75" x 1."
