Description:

George Washington inducts a veteran of Cowpens & Guilford Court House into the Society of the Cincinnati

GEORGE WASHINGTON (1732-1799) Partly-engraved Document Signed, "Go:Washington," as President of the Society of the Cincinnati, 1 page, 20.25" x 14" on parchment, Mount Vernon, March 1, 1787, countersigned "H Knox," as Secretary of the Society inducting "William Barret Esquire of the Commonwealth of Virginia," as a member of the Society. Moderate foxing and soiling, engrossment and signatures somewhat light, but entirely legible, some minor marginal losses at bottom right, expected folds, else very good.

The recipient, William Barret (1760-1815), joined the 3rd North Carolina Regiment in April 1776 as a Captain and his regiment served at the Siege of Charleston in June 1776. In April 1778, Barret was commissioned a 1st Lieutenant in the 3rd Continental (Baylor's) Dragoons. While encamped at Old Tappan in September 1778, the British surprised the regiment, inflicting 67 casualties (as well as killing 70 horses)—known as "Baylor's Massacre." In 1779 the regiment was assigned to the Southern Department and distinguished itself at Cowpens, Guilford Court House and Eutaw Springs. Barret remained with the regiment until the close of the war in 1783. (Heitman)

An attractive example of a Society of Cincinnati membership certificate with crisp, dark printing.
