Description:

1790s Account Book, Possibly from Coastal Virginia: "To Doctr. Ramsay for Inoculating Negroes…"

A 3pp handwritten account book with entries spanning from January 1795 to January 1799, entitled at top: "Mr. Wm. Moseley, Orphan To Jon.a. Park his Guardian." Inscribed on three pages of bifold paper, with a docket found on the last page. Expected wear including uneven toning, isolated ink stains, minor spotty fading, and some ink bleed-through. Scattered chipped edges and holes corresponding to creases formed when the document was previously folded into sixths. 7.375" x 9.75." Property of the Chrysler Museum of Art, Sold to Benefit Museum Acquisitions. Formerly a Gift of Walter P. Chrysler, Jr.

The ledger is ruled into three neat columns designating the date, a description of the expense, and the amount owed in pounds sterling. The majority of the account book entries relate to standard expenses relating to food (pork, lard, corn, etc.); apparel (shoes, stockings, hats, handkerchiefs); and to travel, lodging, board, laundry, and per diem work. Some of the more interesting entries relate to medical procedures, and can be found below.

From May 1795:
"drawing a Tooth"

From May 1795:
"To Doctr. Ramsay for Inoculating negroes"

From May 1795:
"To Doctr. Stark for…do…"

From July 1796:
"delivering a Negro Woman &c"

From August 1797:
"To Cash pd for necessaries, for Isaac's Family in the Small Pox"

The only possible indications of a location associated with the manuscript are not conclusive. One reference is found on the third page, with a cryptic entry relating to a certain "Upshur Colony," and two other entries on the first page list travel expenses to Rhode Island. Considering that this document was probably acquired in or around Norfolk, Virginia--that is, the current site of the Chrysler Museum of Art from which it was deaccessioned--we could assume that the account book relates to eastern Virginia. There were Moseleys found in Norfolk County and Princess Anne County, Virginia whose ancestors had emigrated from England by way of Holland. Branches of the Moseley Family eventually settled in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia.

The item is accompanied by is original archival mount from the Chrysler Museum, complete with an original typewritten label and museum accession number.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
