Six Vintage Photos of the Kennedy Family Enjoying the Outdoors by Camelot Photographer Mark Shaw, With Rare Studio Stamp, Type 1
Archive

John F. Kennedy. A charming archive of six vintage black and white prints taken by photographer Mark Shaw capturing members of the Kennedy Family, including John and Jacqueline, enjoying the outdoors in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts, and in Washington, D.C. New York: Mark Shaw, 1963. Type 1. Varying sizes, detailed below. Red and black pencil notations along with Shaw's studio stamp at versos. Prints may exhibit some tiny scattered surface marks; very minor isolated areas of discoloration; light corner creases, some with negligible loss; and wear to edges of prints, but they are still quite exceptional and suitable for framing.

The Kennedys have always been widely known for their love of sports and the outdoors. These photographs show them doing some of the activities they love best. This endearing photographic archive comprises:

1) John and Jackie on a boat in Hyannis Port accompanied by five Kennedy children, including Caroline, 13.25" x 8.25".

2) Jackie holding Caroline while she and a young Maria Shriver feed a horse, 9" x 13.25".

3) Caroline standing in a makeshift pool on the patio while Jackie smiles and squirts her with water from a rubber whale, 13.25" x 9".

4) Caroline running down a path in Hyannis Port as her beloved nanny, Maud Shaw, watches on, 16.75" x 10.5".

5) A slightly older Caroline and a cousin jumping on a trampoline set up on the Hyannis Port beach, 13.25" x 9".

6) A chest-length portrait of a serious-faced John Jr. at around three years old, 6.5" x 9.75".

"Just as Abraham Lincoln thought Mathew Brady's photography won him the presidency, so Jackie Kennedy thought Mark Shaw's pictures helped her husband win the 1960 election" (Sullivan, 492). Mark Shaw quickly became a family friend and was a frequent guest in the Kennedy home. Allowed complete access to the family, Shaw began to take photographs of the Kennedys in Georgetown and in Washington; on vacation in Hyannis Port and elsewhere; and even in the White House once Kennedy was elected President. As Shaw died unexpectedly in 1969 at the age of 47, Kennedy prints bearing Shaw's studio stamps are quite rare.
