Includes:

Broadsheet printing by The Southern Independence Association, a British pro-Confederate advocacy group formed during the Civil War. Oversized sheet printed on one side only, 11" x 13.6", no listed publisher, but produced in Great Britain. At top: "The Southern Independence Association. Reprinted from the ‘North Cheshire Herald,' November 21st, 1863." A printing of a letter by T. B. Kershaw defending his position of support for the Confederacy and citing the State Ordinance of Virginia and the Declaration of Independence as the basis for the Southern States' right to secede from the Union. With a long tab along the top left edge indicating it was inserted in a book or pamphlet, though it was likely originally distributed as a separate circular rather than a formal publisher's insert.

"The Fanaticism of the Democratic Party. Speech of Hon. Owen Lovejoy, of Illinois." Washington, D.C.: Buell & Blanchard, Printers. 1860. Octavo, 8 pages. A speech delivered in the U.S. House of Representatives on February 21, 1859. A combative speech by the outspoken abolitionist Owen Lovejoy delivered shortly after the Kansas-Nebraska conflicts. A clear indication of the widening gulf between North and South.

"Neal Dow on the American War." No identified publisher or location. 12mo. 4 pages. Portion of a letter dated from Fort St. Philip on the Mississippi River, September 13, 1862. Interesting content, foretelling of Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation stating: "Many of these persons are free negroes of property, bright, intelligent, and active men, who understand perfectly that this war is for the benefit of their race; and they assure me that when the President's proclamation shall come, offering freedom to all the slaves, they will flock to our standard en masse. Such a proclamation will come." Dow also states that there are 500 slaves, now free at the Fort and that the economy of Louisiana which had previously relied wholly on slave labor must now recognize free labor.

"Positions of Parties. Speech of Hon. R.H. Duell, of New York." Octavo, 8 pages. A speech delivered in the House of Representatives on April 12, 1860 citing Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, James Monroe and Patrick Henry. A speech in defense of abolition citing that the Dred Scott decision resulted in the election of James Buchanan.

"American Finances and Resources. Letter No. III of Hon. Robert J. Walker, M.A." London: William Ridgway, 169, Piccadilly, W. 1863. Octavo. 26 pages. An economic argument against slavery.

"Property in the Territories. Speech of Hon. Benj. F. Wade, of Ohio." Washington, D.C.: Buell & Blanchard, Printers. 1860. Octavo, 14 pages. With original wrappers, listing speeches available during the Presidential Campaign of 1860 on the rear wrapper.
