Joseph Moody (1700-1753) was a schoolmaster, York's registrar of deeds, county clerk, and judge. He later became minister of the Second Church of York. Moody was the veiled Puritan minister in Nathaniel Hawthorne's fictional short story "The Minister's Black Veil". He preached with a handkerchief over his face and kept a diary in coded Latin.

Sir William Pepperrell (1696-1759) was made Justice of the Peace in 1717 and a judge in 1725. He organized, financed, and led the 1745 expedition that captured the French garrison at Fortress Louisbourg during King George's War, the North American part of the War of the Austrian Succession (1744-1748). In 1746, he was created a baronet, the first native American ever so honored. He was then knighted by King George II. Parson Samuel Moody, father of William Moody, served as chaplain to Sir William Pepperell's regiment during the 1745 siege of Louisbourg. In 1755, during the French and Indian War, Pepperell was commissioned a Major General, responsible for the defense of the Maine and New Hampshire frontier.
