Description:

Sir Edwin H. Landseer
[London, England], ca. 1856
Sir Edwin Landseer Signed 1856 Drawing w/ Impeccable Provenance!
Signed art
A untitled pencil sketch depicting two deer, one stag and one doe, signed "E. Landseer/ 1856". 1p, measuring 6.25" x 8.25" (sight), no place [London, England], 1856. The stag is seen perched on a rock while the doe is walking up a hill to meet him at left. Mounted below the drawing is the artist's calling card, taken from his home on St. John's Wood Road in London. Exhibits uneven toning with darkened soiling present to lower edge, not affecting illustration; light creasing throughout. Overall, very attractive. Elegantly framed and displayed to the overall size of 14" x 16". Not examined outside of frame.

Provenance: Accompanied by a packet of provenance consisting of photocopies from "Leaves of the Past" by Mary Rebecca Darby Smith (1814-1886) in which she references the sketch in question. Reading in part: "…some of them I extracted from an album of rare interest… where there are sketches of great beauty,- one of which is by Sir Edwin Landseer, whom I knew in England and who drew me two deer on a rock, which have his unmistakable touch and expression…". Smith herself was a notable autograph collector and socialite, in addition to being a worldly traveler.

Sir Edwin Henry Landseer (1802-1873) was an English painter and sculptor known for his paintings of animals- particularly horses, dogs, and stags. Queen Victoria, an ardent fan of his work, commissioned numerous paintings from him, one of which acted as a gift to Prince Albert. Landseer is perhaps most well-known, however, for the lion sculptures at the base of Nelson's Column in Trafalgar Square.
