Hillary Edmund 1919 - 2008 Sir Edmund Hillary signs a gorgeous oversized photo of London newspaper cover

Reproduction "Illustrated London News" newspaper cover from June 27, 1953 printed in black and white on glossy Fujifilm sheet measuring 11" x 14". Photograph signed "Ed Hillary" in blue sharpie marker. In as new condition, labeled and numbered verso.

Sir Edmund Hillary (1919-2008), a Kiwi mountain climber, war veteran, author, and philanthropist, was the first man along with Tibetan guide Tenzing Norgay to summit Mt. Everest in May 1953, just one month before this newspaper issue was published. Everest -- the 29,000-foot-tall mountain in the Himalayas range and the tallest mountain in the world -- had attracted many climbers prior to Hillary's expedition. One of these explorers was George Mallory, who disappeared in 1924 and whose body was uncovered about 2,000 below the summit in 1999. Neither Hillary nor Norgay attempted to summit Mt. Everest after their initial success. In 1977, Hillary told journalists: "I've always hated the danger part of climbing, and it's great to come down again because it's safe. But there is something about building up a comradeship_ÑÓthat I still believe is the greatest of all feats_ÑÓand sharing in the dangers of your company of peers."

This photograph does not memorialize the Everest ascent, but it does testify to the incredible working relationship of Hillary and Norgay. Here, both mountaineers are shown dressed in waterproof gear, wearing goggles and holding equipment. The two never revealed who was the first climber to summit Mount Everest. Rather, they shared the glory of having been the first two together to reach the top.
