Partly Printed Document Signed "Simon Bolivar" as President of the Republic of Venezuela, 1p, 7.5" x 12". Santaf - [Bogota], August 22, 1819. In Spanish, not translated. Countersigned, endorsement on verso. Blank integral address leaf. Watermarked laid paper. Minor flaws, uneven edges, lightly soiled. Very Good condition.

The first two words of the printed title, "Supreme Chief" have been crossed out and replaced with "President." Bolivar promotes Leon Galindo to Captain in the Infantry. Joseph Leon Galindo Camacho (1795 -1865) arrived in upper Peru (today, Bolivia) with Simon Bolivar. On December 9, 1824, in the Battle of Ayacucho, Galindo was the victorious Commander of the Bogotö Battalion of the 2nd Colombian Division under Commander-in-Chief Antonio Jos - de Sucre. Ayacucho was the battle that secured the independence of Peru and ensured independence for the rest of South America.

The Battle of Boyacö fought on August 7, 1819, resulted in Bolivar's victory over Royalist Colombian-Venezuelan forces. Viceroy Juan de Samano was informed of the defeat and managed to escape and flee to Spain. This brought to an end the reign of the Spanish Empire in northern Latin America and the independence of Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, and Panama from Spain. On August 10, 1819, Bolivar entered Bogota, and was hailed as the liberator of Colombia. The Constitution of Venezuela was sanctioned by of the Congress of Angostura (now Ciudad Bolivar) on August 11, 1819. On August 14, 1819, Bolivar wrote to the Vice President of the Congress on the victory of Boyacö, officially ending Spanish rule in New Grenada (Colombia). The provisional Constitution was signed on August 15, 1819. One week later, on August 22, 1819, Simon Bolivar signed this promotion.
