Description:

Silent Era Star Mary Pickford 22 Vintage Photographs from Multiple Studios

A collection of 22 vintage photographs of "America's Sweetheart" of the silent film age, Mary Pickford. All measuring approximately 8" x 10", New York and Los Angeles, undated [Ca. 1910-1920]. The majority of photographs are developed in sepia-tone, with only one in black and white. Two of the photographs are from Benjamin Strauss' studio, eleven from Nelson Evans' studio, one from Ira Hill, one from White, and seven from Fred Hartsook. Pickford is captured in a number of different poses and settings - reading, dancing, seated with flowers, posed with an oversized hat, etc., along with numerous professional headshots. Light silvering to some edges. Minor wear and bumping, along with edge curling. Overall very good.

Hollywood silent movie actress Mary Pickford (1892-1979) was one of the most successful female actresses of the silent era. Her small stature, large eyes, and golden blond sausage ringlets enabled her to portray children and young heroines throughout her early career. After aging out of this typecasting, Pickford turned to movie production. She co-founded the United Artists Studio (along with future husband and actor Douglas Fairbanks, comedic actor Charlie Chaplin, and director D.W. Griffith) in 1919. Pickford was also one of the 36 founding members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the organization responsible for determining Oscar winners.

Nelson Evans has been called “Hollywood’s Early Forgotten Portrait Photographer.” He ran his own studio in Hollywood for a brief period before enlisting during WWI and was put in charge of photography supplies for the air force. When he returned to Hollywood, he became a pioneer, helping to invent the entire practice of Hollywood portrait photography. The Evans Studio used backdrops, props, and special lighting effects to create entire worlds, giving a magical element to his photographs. Unfortunately, his career was cut short when he died at the age of 33 in 1922.
