Declaration Signer Stephen Hopkins attests to the sale of land by Elisha Hopkins to six named Trustees of Newport, then the capital of the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, in part, "This Indenture, Made the Eighth Day of March in the Seventh Year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lord George the Second, King of Great Britain...Between Elisha Hopkins of Scituate in the County of Providence in the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations in New England. Yeoman of the one Part, and John Wanton, William Coddington, George Goulding, Jahleel Brenton, Daniel Updike and John Gardner all of Newport, in said Colony, Esqrs. Trustees especially empowered by the General Assembly of the Colony aforesaid...for the letting out of One Hundred Thousand Pounds in Bills of publick Credit on said Colony, in such Manner as said Act...expresseth the said Bills to be let out, on the other Part, Witnesseth, That, the said Elisha Hopkins for and in Consideration of the Sum of Eighty Pounds in good and lawful Bills of publick Credit...well and truly paid by the aforenamed Trustees, the Receipt whereof he doth hereby acknowledge…”

Stephen Hopkins (1707-1785) was a governor of the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, a Chief Justice of the Rhode Island Supreme Court, and a signer of the Declaration of Independence. From a prominent Rhode Island family, Hopkins began his public service in 1730, when at the age of 23, he became a justice of the peace in the newly formed town of Scituate, a position that he held until 1735. He also became the clerk of Scituate in 1731 which he held for 11 years until moving to Providence in 1742.

We insure through Berkley Asset Protection with rates of $.70 per $100 of value, among the lowest insurance rates in the industry. Our shipping department cameras document every package, both outgoing and incoming, for maximum security. In addition, we compare our shipping and handling rates against those of other auction houses, to ensure that our charges are among the lowest in the trade.

International shipments: In order to comply with our insurance provider, all international shipments will be sent via Fed Ex and customs paperwork will show a value of $1.00. International buyers should contact our office directly with any questions regarding this policy.
