Roosevelt Theodore 1858 - 1919 Document Signed "Theodore Roosevelt" as President and "Paul Morton" as Secretary of the Navy, 1 page, 16" x 19.5". Washington, September 7, 1904. On parchment. Completed in manuscript. Affixed to the lower left is a 2.25" diameter seal of the Department of the Navy. Fine 5.25" long signature of Roosevelt. Creases in blank right edge. Blank triangular portion missing in upper left corner, 1.25" across top, 6.25" down right edge. Lightly rolled, no folds. Fine condition.

President Roosevelt appoints Henry B. Soule as Lieutenant, junior grade, in the Navy. Paul Morton (1857 - 1911), Roosevelt's Secretary of the Navy from 1904 - 1905, was the son of Grover Cleveland's Secretary of Agriculture J. Sterling Morton, the brother of Joy Morton who founded Morton Salt, and cousin of Benjamin Harrison's Vice President Levi P. Morton. Henry Bishop Soule was a direct descendant of George Soule, a passenger on the Mayflower and a signer of the Mayflower Compact.
