The film was based on the novel Topaz by Leon Uris.

There is a cut slit into which the tab is inserted on the blank portion upon which Hitchcock has drawn his caricature and signed it.

The opening of his television program "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" began with one of his favorite melodies, Charles Gounod's "Funeral March for a Marionette." As the music played, the series title appeared over this self-caricature. After a silhouette of Hitchcock stepped into the frame, fitting into his caricature, Alfred Hitchcock looked into the camera and greeted his viewers: "Good evening…"
