Description:

Disney Walt 1901 - 1966 Signed Disney Courvoisier color cel set-up from the beloved 1945 feature "Three Caballeros"

Original Courvoisier color cel set-up, 8.5" x 7.5", prepared by the Walt Disney studio, matted to 14.5" x 14". Boldly signed on the lower right of the matte in blue crayon, "To Donna Jane / Best Wishes / Walt Disney." Plastic tape on verso attaching cel set-up to matte. Written on the matte in another hand at lower left edge beneath image, now virtually indiscernible, is "From Three Caballeros." Between the actual cel and Disney's signed inscription are clearly, but faintly written, in an unknown hand, "original" and, within a small circle, "WD / P" (Walt Disney Productions). Matte is browned at edges. Disney's handwriting is dark. Fine condition.

A cel from "The Cold-Blooded Penguin" segment of "The Three Caballeros," released on February 3, 1945. In this seven minute short, the narrator (Sterling Holloway) tells Donald Duck the story of Pablo, a penguin who decides to leave the South Pole and head north towards South America to a warmer climate.

The cel here offered depicts Pablo after he has sailed past "the Juan Fernandez Islands where Robinson Crusoe once lived and still does apparently," according to the narrator who, as bells ring, announces "Four bells and all's well." It is at this time in the short, at 4:44, that we see this celluloid painting of Pablo holding his navigational chart with a lit candle on his beak so he could read it at night.

In 1938, Disney granted San Francisco fine art dealer Guthrie Courvoisier the exclusive right to market their original animation art. A special 20-person crew of Disney artists from the animation department was set up at the Disney studio to assemble the cels and prepare the appropriate background art, reminiscent of the film.
