Margaret Mitchell's epic novel of love and war won the Pulitzer Prize and is said to be the fastest-selling novel in the history of American publishing (50,000 copies in a single day). The novel's release, originally scheduled for May, was delayed until June pending the Book of the Month Club schedule. Before a decision had been finalized, 10,000 copies had been printed with the erroneous May release notice, which can be seen in this copy. The book would go on to become the basis for the 1939 film starring Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh. "Gone with the Wind" is regarded as one of the greatest films of all time and ranks No.6 on the American Film Institute's list of the top 100 American films. In 1989, the United States Library of Congress selected it for preservation in the National Film Registry.

It's possible that this volume was made out to Ashton Budd Collins Sr. (1885-1976) and his wife, Hughie Beatty Collins (1903–2001). Collins was an American inventor and marketer. During his tenure as commercial manager for the Alabama Power Company, he created the popular mascot Reddy Kilowatt, who became a popular corporate trade symbol for the company for much of the 20th century. Collins patented the design for Reddy in 1933. In 1946, an animated film was produced by Collins, starring Reddy Kilowatt, entitled "Reddy Made Magic."
