An outstanding letter between two contemporary Psychiatrists In the year Freud published his most famous book Das Unbehagen in der Kultur ("The Uneasiness in Civilization"),  which was one of Freud's most important and widely read works, and one of the most influential and studied books in the field of modern psychology.  Freud emphasized the important clash between the desire for individuality and the expectations of society and in addition both men held strong beliefs in the functional theory of organic disorders. Both theorized that certain external causative factors can act as precipitators of imbalance and give rise to functional or structural disruption, and that these external factors have their effect upon underlying internal systems of equilibrium and integration. (Thus many chronic disturbances are not caused by external, mechanical, chemical, or infectious agents, but by the stresses of the struggle for existence). These emotional conflicts arise during daily living, in the social interchange with significant figures in the environment that have symbolic as well as actual significance. Karl Fahrenkamp was strongly influenced by Freudian views, and explored the influence of emotions upon bodily disturbances and of bodily disease. By 1926, Karl Fahrenkamp demonstrated the influence of emotions on fluctuations of blood pressure and presented a strong case for the psychogenic origin of essential hypertension. Both of these renown Psychiatrists  were firm believers in the mind/body connection.

A fantastic letter with an important association between Freud and a colleague. A translation of the letter is shown below in full:

"Very esteemed Doctor: I accept the photos with thanks. Basically, one cannot say anything else about their representations than what once was said in a simple way by a student in an introduction to a composition: 'Already the old Romans knew about love.' The most beautiful picture you sent is of a drink container of the King. I myself have such a delicate piece in my possession which Prof. Delgado brought to me from Lima. Very cordially yours."
