Sir William Pepperell, hero at Louisbourg, and Captain Jeremiah Moulton signed Maine, Massachusetts Bay document

WILLIAM PEPPERELL (1696-1759) Manuscript Document Signed "Wm Pepperrell J: peace," 1.5 pages, 7.25" x 12.25", front & verso, with docketed integral sheet. York, Province of Massachusetts Bay,August 10, 1737.  Also signed "Edmund Moody," "Mary Moody," and by two witnesses. Pepperrel also handwrote the four lines above his signature attesting to both Moodys' signatures. Also signed "Jer Moulton Regr."  On laid paper. One toned horizontal and two lightly toned vertical folds with holes in blank areas and at folds. Expertly mended. Very Good condition.

Docketed: "Edmund Moody's Deed of Sale to Joseph Mitchell Junr." Both Moody and Mitchell are "of Kittery in the County of York … of the Province of the Massachusetts Bay…" Kittery was in the Province of Maine in the Province of Massachusetts Bay.

Jeremiah Moulton (1688-1765)  was a Justice of the Peace, Sheriff of York County, and member of the Massachusetts Council. Father Sebastain Rale was a Jesuit missionary who worked  among the eastern Abenaki tribe. He was stationed on the border of Acadia and New England and helped protect the border of Acadia by encouraging raids upon the British settlements in present-day Maine. Captain Moulton helped lead the raid which killed many Abenaki and Father Rale in 1724. The Massachusetts Council offered bounty on Abenaki scalps and a special _100 scalp bounty placed on Râle's head. During King George's War twenty years later, Colonel Moulton commanded one of the three Massachusetts regiments in the seige of Louisbourg.
