James S. Copley (1916-1973) was publisher of the “San Diego Union,” “San Diego Union-Tribune,” and “San Diego Evening Tribune” from 1947 (Nixon's first year in Congress) until his death in 1973 (while Nixon was President). The San Diego History Center describes his politics as "unabashedly conservative, Republican and pro-American." Upon her husband's death in 1973, Helen K. Copley (1922-2004) became the head of the Union Tribune Publishing Company.

(1) Typed Letter Signed “Dick Nixon,” December 15, 1975. Handwritten salutation “Dear Helen,” with 28-word handwritten postscript signed “N”. In full, “As the year 1975 comes to an end, I want you to know how deeply I have appreciated your loyal friendship and support over the years. Only during difficult periods does one learn who his real friends are. I am grateful that you have always been in that group.”

Handwritten postscript “Pat joins me in sending our best wishes for Christmas and the New Year, (And incidentally we subscribe to and like the Union. Keep up the good work.) N”

(2) Typed Letter Signed “Dick Nixon,” January 6, 1976. Handwritten salutation “Dear Helen,” with 21-word handwritten postscript. In full, “This is just a note to tell you how deeply touched and appreciative Pat and I were by your thoughtfulness in remembering us at Christmastime. Late in the evening on Christmas Day, sitting around the fireplace in our living room which overlooks the Pacific, we remarked that of all the Christmas observances we have enjoyed -- at the White House, in California, in Florida, and at Camp David -- this was without question one of the best.

“We were fortunate that the whole family could be together. Tricia and Ed flew in from New York, Julie and David came from Washington. And, of course, King Timahoe, Vickie (now, except for deafness, a very healthy 15-year old poodle) and Pasha were on hand for the occasion. Adding to the festivities and completing the family circle were Manolo and Fina, whom we have always considered to be members of our family for fifteen years. But the fact that you remembered us so generously with the inscribed special edition of ‘The Cave Paintings of Baja California,’ meant more than I can adequately put into words. Pat and all the family join me in extending our very best wishes for the New Year.”
Nixon’s valet Manolo Sanchez and his wife, Fina, worked for the Nixons since 1962; in the White House, Fina was Mrs. Nixon’s personal maid.

Handwritten postscript “The books Jim & You have sent us through the years have a major place in the California section of our library –”
