Prokofiev Sergei 1891 - 1953 Sergei Prokofiev autographed and signed Russian postcard


Sergei Prokofiev (1891_ÑÓ1953) was a Russian composer awarded the Rubinstein Prize in 1910 for his piano concerto. He also wrote ballet music for "The Love of Three Oranges" (1921). Important Autograph Letter signed "Serge Prokofieff", penned in French in blue fountain pen on the message side of a Russian black and white picture postcard depicting a steamship. Written in Polenovo, Russia on September 6, 1935. Addressed to M. D. Calvocoressi, London. Postcard measures 5.875" x 4". The composer writes: "Dear Mr. Calvocoressi, I have just read with pleasure your article on The Love of Three Oranges in the Radio Times. It's exactly the way in which my music must be explained to the English, and, for this I thank you very much. I am just back from a trip to the Caucasus, from the Caspian Sea to the Black Sea. In sincere friendship, Serge Prokofieff .... " Very rare letter mentioning the composer's best known work. In fine condition with expected wrinkles and folded corners. The London address of the recipient has been crossed out. From the Robert Batchelder collection, priced by him at $2750.

This remarkable piece is offered directly from the estate of Robert Batchelder, one of the most important dealers of the 20th century, who began collecting autographs and historical documents in the late 1960's. Each piece will include Robert's original description indicating the retail price which could have been 20 years ago, in addition to his inventory folder containing his handwritten notes. Robert's highly diverse background and amazing achievements include a long list of important societal memberships. Examples worthy of note include an honorary membership to the Society Cincinnati as well as memberships to the Manuscript Society, the ABAA (Antiquarian Booksellers Association of America), the ANA (American Numismatic Association), the PAGCA (Pennsylvania Antique Gun Collectors Association), the PADA (Professional Autograph Dealer Association), and the UACC (Universal Autograph Collectors Club). He was a graduate of University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School and served in the U.S. Army Air Force.

A portion of the commission on Batchelder lots will be donated to the Alzheimer's foundation.
