Description:

Secretary's Book of Co. G, 19th NY Regiment., Dating 1859-1861

Measuring 6.75" x 8", St. Andrews, Montgomery, New York, dated September 5, 1859 to November 4, 1861. The book records the meeting minutes of a military company named the Highland Guards, who would become Company G of the 19th New York Regiment. The unit was mustered in on May 22, 1861 and eventually was designated the 3rd New York Regiment of Light Artillery in December 1861. Minutes from company meetings show the early actions taken by the regiment during the early months of the war, with purchases of military supplies and resolutions passed on involvement in the conflict. With marbled boards, which have become separated on both the front and back. A few pages have come loose, but the binding is mostly sound. Faint edge toning. Minor amounts of soiling and foxing throughout. Very good.

Highlights from the entries include:

May 20, 1861: "On motion it was resolved the company volunteer for the war…Resolved - that in the death of John T. Thomas this company has been deprived of an able and faithful member and a respected and honored associate and friend. Resolved - that while we sincerely deplore the loss of our member, and especially at this time, when our country is imperiled, and our institutions endangered, yet we desire to recognize in this event, the hand of He who rules in the armies of Heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth…" Along with numerous motions for the purchase of blankets, gloves, caps, canteens, haversacks, cutlery, and plates.

September 2, 1861: "Lieut Rouk, Lieut Kain, Mr. Morrison, Halsey Kidd, J.N. Van Kuren, Alexander Kidd, Andrew McDougal, Beverly Kidd, Willett Kidd, each of the above members received two rubber blankets, two woolen blankets, two haversacks, two plates, two knives and forks, and two spoons…On motion all members be excused from fines who are in the service of the country. Carried."

The 19th New York Infantry Regiment was organized at Elmira, New York, and mustered in for two years, beginning on May 22, 1861. After a brief stint defending Washington, D.C., the regiment was attached to Sandford's Division, Patterson's Army, and saw service in the occupation of Martinsburg, Virginia, and a skirmish at Bunker Hill. From there, it moved to occupy Maryland Heights and then to Hyattstown. It then served duty on Upper Potomac until December, when the designation of regiment was changed to 3rd Regiment New York Light Artillery.
