In October 1808, Henry Dearborn was approaching the end of his term as President Thomas Jefferson's Secretary of War. This letter was probably written to his son Henry A.S. Dearborn while the latter was superintending the construction of Forts Scammel and Preble in Portland, Maine.

Henry Dearborn served with distinction in the Revolutionary War. He was a prisoner-of-war in Canada, an aide to General Washington, and a participant at Yorktown. Jefferson relied on him as a seasoned military adviser. Issues that fell under Dearborn's purview as Secretary of War included Indian policy, national borders, and the formation of the new military academy. Dearborn's son inherited some of his father's martial characteristics; he commanded Boston volunteers during the War of 1812.
