Second Boer War Archive: 20 Fabulous Photos Depicting the Lanarkshire Yeomanry

An archive of twenty period photographs from Douglas Camp in Lanarkshire, Scotland, ca. 1900, presumably taken during a training period prior to departure to South Africa during the Second Boer War (1899-1902). The sepia-colored photos are either loose prints or mounted on thick stock mounts, with 4/5 of the collection annotated with captions in pencil. Expected wear to photo surfaces including light scuffs, isolated foxing, or speckling; the photo mounts show some chipped corners, abrasions, and edge darkening. Else very good to near fine. The smallest photograph measures 3.5" x 2.375" while the largest measures 7.625" x 5.75."

The Lanarkshire Yeomanry Regiment was established as a volunteer regiment of the British Army in 1819; it operated as a cavalry, infantry, and artillery unit under various names and associations until it was disbanded in 1999. The Lanarkshire Yeomanry Regiment served with distinction during the Second Boer War (1899-1902), First World War (1914-1918), and Second World War (1941-1945).

The Lanarkshire Yeomanry Regiment responded to a call for reserves issued on December 24, 1899, about two months into the Second Boer War. The emergency declaration followed Black Week, a series of disastrous British military defeats at Stormberg, Magersfontein, and Colenso during one week in mid-December 1899, in which over 2,000 British soldiers were captured, injured, or killed. The Second Boer War, like its predecessor the First Boer War (1880-1881), pitted the British against independent Dutch-speaking Boers in and around modern day South Africa. The partisans bitterly competed for territory and natural resources, resorting to guerilla warfare on the part of the Boers, and scorched earth and concentration camps on the part of the British.

The archive shows a variety of subjects encompassing both formal and informal camp life: soldiers and officers are shown in formation, preparing military equipment, or exercising their cavalry mounts, as well as shaving, talking, dancing, and attending church services. There is even a photograph depicting camp followers doing laundry on a massive scale!

The list below provides the pencil inscribed caption, if included, as well as a brief description of the photograph when the subject cannot be determined by the caption.
