Description:

Lee Charles 1731 - 1782 Charles Lee, Attorney General under George Washington, important scripted ledger for list of legal causes
Stitched legal accounting ledger on laid paper with soft wraps. Dated 1793. 11.75" x 7.25". Two stitches remain with the balance no longer present. Most of the internal leaves of the book are detached, and unbound. Soft wrap covers detached. Rear cover is no longer present, the front has substantial edgewear, with significant paper loss, toning and staining. Most of the spine is missing. Owner's name and date scripted to front wrap as "Charles Lees/List of Causes/September 1793"

An important relic personally owned by Charles Lee as United States Attorney General under George Washington. He was elected to office in 1795 and continued in this capacity until 1801. Contains a detailed and heavily scripted list of pending or completing legal cases and appeals. Included in the ledger are dates, the names of the parties, and occasional reference to the judgments (such as "reversed", "affirmed", "sent to rules", "decree", 'dismd with forte"). 25 leaves, (50 pages), last page missing most of the paper.

A wonderful piece of history. It is unclear whose hand wrote the contents or cover wraps, but quite possibly portions of the ledger are written in the hand of Charles Lee.
