Description:

SCLC Report to Board of Directors, Inscribed by MLK, Rev. Douglas, and Abby Mann

Over 100pp unpaginated, measuring 8.25" x 10.75", Miami, Florida, dated April 12-13, 1966. A typed "Report to the Board of Directors of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. With detailed reports from the Office of the President (Dr. Martin Luther King), and the Offices of Public Relations, Affiliates, Program Director, Department Citizenship Education, Operation Breadbasket, Voter Registration and Political Education, and others.

The front cover of the report bears a number of inscriptions, of which we believe may have been written by Reverend Jesse Douglas, Abby Mann, and Martin Luther King Jr. The top margin reads "Rev Jesse L. Douglas/716 Glass St./ Montgomery 8, Ala./265-2114", and we believe this may be in Reverend Douglas' hand. At the bottom margin, written in pencil reads, in what we believe to be his own hand, "Mr Abby Mann - Producer and writer." Beneath this is written in ink, "The Montgomery Improvement Association", and we believe this to be in Dr. King's hand. Accompanying the lot is a copy of a sample of King's handwriting with comparisons as to where we think the handwriting matches. The report has been stapled together, with some minimal rusting around the staples. Light wear and toning to the cover edges, else very good. All of the inscriptions and possible signature are bold and clear.

Reverend Jesse L. Douglas was born in 1930 in New Orleans. In 1963, he became president of the Montgomery Improvement Association and worked over the next three years in conjunction with the SCLC to register black voters. Douglas was a trusted friend and ally to Dr. King, helping to coordinate the Selma to Montgomery marches. One of the everlasting images of the marches shows Douglas linked arm-in-arm with King and John Lewis, taken on March 17, 1965. Abby Mann (1927-2008) was a producer, film writer, and director, known for his work on social issues and controversial topics. In early 1978 he released a made-for-television movie entitled "King", a six-hour docu-drama. Mann had met Dr. King in 1961, who had admired Mann's Oscar-winning "Judgment at Nuremberg". Several civil rights activists criticized historical inaccuracies and the depiction of King's personality in the film, while Mann defended his project writing, "Martin King is not shown as weak or cowardly in any way. Because of his eloquence, his courage, because he put principles above himself. I think he's the greatest American of this century."
