Description:

Garfield James 1831 - 1881 Scarce James A. Garfield Signed Executive Mansion Card.

Scarce Executive Mansion card, 4.5" x 2.75". With "Executive Mansion, Washington" printed in blue ink at top right corner. Garfield has signed across the front of the card, "James A. Garfield" adding the date below of "May 6, 1881". Gently toned, with a strip of mounting remnant along the right edge verso.

Inaugurated as President on March 4, 1881, Garfield served in office less than five months. He was shot by a disgruntled office seeker, Charles Guiteau, on July 18, 1881 and died of his wounds on September 19, 1881.

Due to the short time he served in office, Executive Mansion cards signed by Garfield are exceedingly rare, noting that one sold previously in 2008 for nearly $13,000 https://www.rrauction.com/PastAuctionItem/3167473, and was not nearly as nice as this, almost certainly the finest known of the few examples.
