Turgenev Ivan

Scarce Ivan Turgenev Signed and Inscribed Carte De Visite Albumen Print

Carte de Visite Albumen print signed "Iw. Turgenev", and inscribed in German at the foot "Dem großen Sänger Henschel zum freundschaftlichen Andenken von Iw. Turgenev/Paris, 1879", which loosely translated is "To the great singer Henschel for in friendly memory of Iw. Turgenev … " Carte de Visite by Lege & Bergeron, with a spot of emulsion-loss within inscription, narrow band at top edge faded.

Turgenev signed photographs are rare, consistent with his modest character. The recipient is the young Sir George Henschel (1850-1934), a close friend of Brahams and a celebrated baritone.

Ivan Turgenev was a novelist, poet and playwright, known for his detailed descriptions of everyday life in 19th century Russia. Although Turgenev has been overshadowed by his contemporaries, Fyodor Dostoevsky and Leo Tolstoy, he remains one of the major figures of 19th century Russian literature. Turgenev realistically portrayed the peasantry and the rising intelligentsia in its attempt to move the country into a new age. There is perhaps no novelist of foreign nationality who more naturally than Ivan Turgenev inherits a niche in a library for English readers.
