Description:

Scarce Andrew Johnson PSA CDV Signed as President

A period carte de visite depicting sitting 17th U.S. President Andrew Johnson (1808-1875), signed and inscribed by him as "Andrew Johnson / Jany 23d 1869" verso. N.p. but presumably Washington, D.C. Encapsulated and PSA/DNA certified authentic. The sepia-colored albumen photograph is mounted on a stock card. Expected wear and weathering including even toning. Scattered ghost impressions of newspaper print lettering, very faint, verso, else near fine. The carte de visite measures 2.375" x 4" while the slab measures 4.25" x 7.25."

Photography of Andrew Johnson is uncommon, and the angle of this sitting--with Johnson at right side profile facing left--provides a spectacular view of the unique hairstyle so often associated with him. The top of Johnson's hair appears curiously flattened near the side part, and then curled over his ear in a style reminiscent of Lancelot.

When he signed this carte de visite in late January 1869, President Johnson had less than six weeks left in office, and he must have felt all of the constraints and frustrations of a lame-duck president. Johnson failed to be reelected by the Democratic National Convention in July 1868 following his impeachment trial in the Spring of 1868, so he would simply finish out the remainder of Abraham Lincoln's second term terminating on March 4, 1869. One of Johnson's last executive acts was the issuance of his final amnesty on Christmas Day 1868, just one month earlier. This last amnesty pardoned all Confederate agents without exception, including former Confederate President Jefferson Davis, and Dr. Samuel Mudd, who had treated John Wilkes Booth after Lincoln's assassination.
