Maryland

Scarce 1793 printing of Maryland's first militia law passed under the Federal Constitution

Printed document, four pages, 8" x 13", Toned along horizontal folds, margins a bit wrought, otherwise very good. [Annapolis, 1793] being the text of a bill pending in the Maryland Assembly for "An ACT to arrange, regulate and discipline, the militia of this state, according to an act of the congress of the United Sates, entitled, An act more effectually to provide for the national defense, by establishing an uniform militia throughout the United States..." The act spells out in exacting detail the regulations of the state concerning eligibility (white males between ages 18 and 45), ordering returns to be made listing such individuals, setting fines for non-compliance, establishing exercise and review days, and the gerneal organization of the state militia as a whole. This was likely the first act regulating the militia in Maryland under the new federal constitution. The docket on the final page indicates however that this version did not pass the state senate: "Negatived by the Senate - Nov 1793"
