Satchel Paige (1906-1982) is remembered as one of the most talented pitchers of all time. Throughout the 1920s and 30s, Paige was also one of the most well-known black baseball players. His professional career is one of the longest recorded, spanning from 1924 to 1966. Paige played professional baseball in the U.S. but also in Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, and Mexico. In his early career, Paige favored blistering fastballs, but an arm injury prompted him to develop another highly effective pitch around 1943. The "hesitation pitch", as it became known, disconcerted batters because of its jerkiness and unpredictability.
