Description:

Sarony Studio
n.p., ca. 1922
Sarony Studio Photograph of Silent Film Actor In "Omar The Tentmaker" Costume
Photograph

A Sarony Studio photograph of Broadway and Hollywood actor Guy Bates Post (1875-1968) dressed in Eastern costume for his role as Omar the Tentmaker in the 1922 silent film of the same name. N.d. but ca. 1922. N.p. The sepia-colored gelatin silver photograph shows Post/Omar wearing a turban, silk robes, and an elaborate tasseled scarf. Signed in the plate as "© Sarony" in the lower right corner. Expected wear including minor to moderate wrinkling in the upper right corner, as well as isolated silvering and areas of minor surface imperfection. The lower right corner is well-creased. Else near fine. 8.75" x 12.5".

Guy Bates Post is best known for the role he played here: Omar the Tentmaker, a humble Arab whose wife is coveted and imprisoned by the Shah. The feature-length silent film released by Associated First National Pictures in 1922 was based on the 1914 Broadway play of the same name.

Napoleon Sarony (1821-1896) was a Canadian-born illustrator and lithographer who opened a photography studio in New York City in 1867. Sarony's son Otto continued the family business until his death in 1903. The Sarony Studio ownership was transferred to three different owners well into the early 1920s, making this a late Sarony Studios portrait photograph.
