Description:

Sanford Dole Signed Legal Document Re: Intestate New Hampshire Expat

A 4pp document signed by Sanford B. Dole (1844-1926), future 1st President of Hawaii, as "Sanford P. Dole" on the page beneath the partly printed cover. April 12, 1880, Honolulu, Hawaiian Islands. Also twice countersigned by Frank P. Hastings (1852-1897), as "F P Hastings," in his role as U.S. Vice Consul at Honolulu. The document consists of a partly printed partly manuscript cover page with "The United States Consulate / Honolulu, Hawaiian Islands" letterhead, secured with green ribbon and a green seal blind embossed "Consulate of the United States / Honolulu, H.T."; as well as a 3pp manuscript document in secretarial script on legal size red-ruled blue-lined paper. Docketed. Expected light wear including folds, edge darkening, and isolated separation along folds, else near fine. 8" x 12.375." Accompanied by an auction certificate from RR Auction (Amherst, New Hampshire) as well as an extensively researched catalog description from Lion Heart Autographs (New York City).

A New Hampshire native named Herbert N. Ager (ca. 1842-1880) had recently died intestate at Wailuku on the island of Maui (Wailuku is located due east of Lahaina.)

The document granted legal executor Sanford B. Dole, in his capacity as "the Administrator duly appointed and qualified by the Supreme Court of the said Hawaiian Islands," the right to delegate powers of attorney to John Hatch of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Hatch thus had the power to "ask, demand, sue for, receive and recover all moneys and other property whatsoever which is now owing, payable or belonging to the estate of the said Herbert N. Ager in the said state of New Hampshire or in any of the said United States of America…"

Sanford Dole was a second-generation resident of Hawaii whose parents were Protestant missionaries from Maine. The lawyer and politician served as the President of the Republic of Hawaii between 1894-1898, and later as the first Governor of the Hawaii Territory between 1900 and 1903.

Frank P. Hastings, born in Calais, Maine, had joined the U.S. State Department in 1874 and served as United States Vice and Deputy Consul in Hawaii from 1877-1886. After a term as Secretary of Foreign Affairs in Hawaii from 1891-1893, Hastings relocated to Washington, D.C. to serve as Secretary of the Hawaiian Legation and Chargé d'Affaires until his sudden death in 1897.

The document provides us with interesting demographic insights about the Hawaiian Islands some twenty years before the United States formally annexed Hawaii in 1898. Document signers Sanford B. Dole and Frank P. Hastings, as well as the subject of the document, the late Herbert N. Ager, were all either first- or second-generation newcomers to Hawaii. The men's migration patterns testified to the constant influx of foreign nationals into the Hawaiian Islands on either a permanent or temporary basis.
