Sanford Dole, Gov. HA Territory, Signed McKinley Memorial Fund Certificate

1p "McKinley Memorial Fund" certificate signed by then Governor of Hawaii Territory Sanford Dole (1844-1926) as "Sanford B. Dole" at lower right. Signed in Honolulu, Hawaii Territory on June 24, 1902. Also signed by the organization's treasurer of the Committee of Residents. The partly printed and partly handwritten certificate on watermarked cream paper shows an oval portrait of the assassinated president at left, and a stippled graphic of palm trees at right. Expected folds, scattered foxing, and a few tiny closed tears, else very good. 8.875" x 6.875".

The certificate was awarded to "Edwr H. Boyen" in recognition of his $5 donation "as a subscription for the Hawaiian Memorial to William McKinley, President of the United States of America."

Hawaiians had a special affinity with 25th U.S. President William McKinley (1843-1901), since Hawaii Territory was annexed during his administration. Fundraising for Honolulu's McKinley Memorial Fund began in the months immediately following McKinley's assassination in September 1901. Ideas brainstormed for Hawaii's McKinley memorial included a public park, children's playground, and even a coastal lighthouse, yet eventually the funds were directed towards the rededication of an existing high school. Honolulu's Fort Street English Day School, founded in 1865, was renamed William McKinley High School in 1907. A bronze sculpture of McKinley was erected in front of the school, and memorial fund monies went towards the school library.

Sanford Dole was a second-generation Hawaiian whose parents were Protestant missionaries from Maine. The lawyer and politician served as the President of the Republic of Hawaii between 1894-1898, and later as the first Governor of the Hawaii Territory between 1900 and 1903.
