Description:

Coleridge Samuel

Autographed manuscript material inscribed overall and signed by British Romantic poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834) as "S.T. Coleridge". Comprised of two sheets of cream watermarked stationery paper, one with postmarked and wax sealed integral address leaf addressed to William Wordsworth's daughter Dora as "Miss Wordsworth, - Quillinan's Esqre, 11 or 13 Bryanston St, Bryanston Square". Both paper sheets are in Coleridge's hand, but the different watermarks, shape, and orientation of the paper suggest that the letters did not originally go together. Both in very good to near fine condition, with expected folds and a few repairs. The largest sheet with minor loss to the lower right corner, the page measuring 6.125" x 8".

On the larger sheet, Samuel Taylor Coleridge wrote Dora Wordsworth (1804-1847) that he had "arrived safe & sound to my great satisfaction". After catching her up on some local gossip, Coleridge continued, "I fully expected a few lines from your Father, by the Post - I hope to find a note - ". He concluded his letter by then describing "a little pony Jared, a young Lady's present", intended for his daughter "Sara Coleridge" (1802-1852). The material is undated, although the smaller paper sheet bears an 1824 watermark.

Samuel Taylor Coleridge, along with his friend and fellow poet William Wordsworth (1770-1850), co-founded the British Romantic Movement. Coleridge and Wordsworth co-published poetry volumes, traveled to Europe together, and even cohabitated (when Coleridge was a houseguest at Wordsworth's Lake District house for  eighteen months!) Coleridge's daughter Sara, Wordsworth's daughter Dora, and fellow poet Robert Southey's daughter Edith (1804-1871) were childhood playmates immortalized in Wordsworth's 1828 poem "The Triad".

Samuel Taylor Coleridge attained celebrity status with his 1798 "Rime of the Ancient Mariner". A man of diverse interests, Coleridge was interested in German philosophy and communal living. He continued writing poetry and literary criticism until his death, but his opium addiction often strained his interpersonal relationships.
