Samuel Remington DS, PSA/DNA Slabbed

PSA/DNA slabbed check No. 120 inscribed overall and signed by firearms manufacturer Samuel Remington as “S. Remington” in the payee line. The partly printed pale blue check dated January 13, 1854 from Ilion, New York features the figure of a standing aproned blacksmith at left. The Cashier of Ilion Bank was directed to pay $15 to an unknown recipient named "Geo. Mettleman." With x-shaped cancellation mark at center, and expected light wrinkles. Graded by PSA/DNA as NM 7. The check measures 6.5" x 2.625" while the slab measures 9.5" x 4.5".

In 1865, approximately 11 years after signing this check, Samuel Remington (1819-1882) was appointed Vice-President of the E. Remington & Sons Company.

Earlier, Samuel's father Eliphalet Remington (1793-1861) had built up a hugely successful firearms manufacturing company in upstate New York, introducing new rifle features, such as a solid steel barrel and a breech-loading capacity, that launched his fledgling firearms company. In 1828, Eliphalet set up his factory in Illion, New York, which had close access to New York canals. Later he fabricated pistols, typewriters, sewing machines, and agricultural tools. Eliphalet incorporated his three sons into the firm, renaming it E. Remington & Son. Between frontier expansion and the Civil War, demand for firearms increased and the company boomed. After Eliphalet’s death from a heart attack in 1861, his sons Philo (1816-1889), our check signer Samuel, and Eliphalet III (1828-1924) continued the business.
