Chase Salmon

Samuel P. Chase signed biblical quote: "Believe not every Spirit"

Paper slip signed by lawyer and politician Salmon P. Chase (1808-1873) as "S. P: Chase." Chase signed his name beneath a handwritten excerpt from John 4:1: "Believe not every Spirit." The cream blue-lined paper slip is attached via corners to a cream card of the same size. Else near fine, measuring 4" x 2.25".

Chase's excerpt comes from John 4:1: "Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world." Why did this passage appeal to Chase? It's unclear, but we do know that Chase was religious. Chase was raised by his uncle and future Episcopalian Bishop Philander Chase, and some historians speculate that Chase's religious upbringing shaped his zealous abolitionism. Later, Secretary of the Treasury Chase ensured the phrase "In God We Trust" appeared on U.S. currency.

Chase, a Dartmouth College-educated lawyer, became known as the "Attorney General for Fugitive Slaves" because he litigated multiple fugitive slave law cases in Ohio. The former Whig and Free Soil Party member served as Governor of Ohio between 1856-1860, and later helped establish the Republican Party. After losing his Republican Party 1860 presidential bid to Abraham Lincoln, Chase was appointed Secretary of the Treasury. In this capacity, he vigorously financed the Union war effort and championed the usage of paper currency between 1861-1864. Lincoln appointed Chase Chief Justice of the Supreme Court following his cabinet resignation; in this role, he presided over the 1868 Andrew Johnson impeachment trial among other landmark cases.
