Samuel Osgood Gorgeous Signed Certificate of Ownership as Naval Officer NY Port

Document signed "S Osgood N Off" as Naval Officer and by David Gelston, Collector. 1p, measuring 11.5" x 16", Port of New York, dated January 3, 1807. Both signatures have white paper seals beside them. The document has flattened folds, with separations and small edge tears. Light toning at the edges and folds. Slightly uneven edges. Boldly signed by Osgood. From a recently discovered collection that has not seen the light of day for over 70 years!

A certificate of Ownership, No. 1. One, issued to "Richard Black…Merchant", who swore that "he together with Bernard Hart of said City Merchant are the only Owners of the Ship or Vessel called the Elizabeth of New York whereof John Bowden is at present Master…" Further details of the vessel includes "Two Decks and Three Masts and that her Length is Eighty nine feet, her Breadth Twenty four feet eleven inches, her Depth Twelve feet five & a half inches, and that she measures Two hundred forty two & 5/95 Tons; that she is a square sterned ship, has a rounded tuck, no galleries and no figure Head…" 

Samuel Osgood (1747-1813) was an American merchant and statesman born in Andover, Massachusetts. He served in the Massachusetts and New York State legislatures, represented Massachusetts in the Continental Congress, and was the fourth Postmaster General of the United States (the first under the current Constitution), serving during George Washington's first term. In 1803, he was appointed by President Jefferson as Naval Officer of the Port of New York, a position he held until his death.

Applicable shipping and handling charges will be added to the invoice. We offer several shipping options, and remain one of the few auction houses who proudly provides professional in-house shipping as an option to our clients. All items will ship with signature required, and full insurance. Most items are sent via Federal Express, with P. O. Box addresses being sent through USPS. We insure through Berkley Asset Protection with rates of $.70 per $100 of value, among the lowest insurance rates in the industry. Our shipping department cameras document every package, both outgoing and incoming, for maximum security. In addition, we compare our shipping and handling rates against those of other auction houses, to ensure that our charges are among the lowest in the trade.

Upon winning your item(s), you will receive an invoice with our in-house shipping and handling fees included. ***We will ship to the address as it appears on your invoice. If any changes to the shipping address need to be made, you must inform us immediately.***

International shipments: In order to comply with our insurance provider, all international shipments will be sent via Fed Ex and customs paperwork will show a value of $1.00. International buyers should contact our office directly with any questions regarding this policy.
