Samuel Huntington & Roger Sherman's Loans from the Revolutionary War and Connecticut's Debts

[American Revolution]. [Connecticut]. Manuscript Accounting of Connecticut’s Loans with the United States. [Hartford?]. 1790. 2pp. on two folio sheets. Old folds, minor wear, near fine.

Accounts for Connecticut noting loans to the government of the United States both from the state itself and from prominent citizens, as well as payments made to soldiers, presumably as pensions. Amounts are indicated both in Continental dollars and in British pounds, as both currencies were in use at the time. The beginning reads: “1790, May 6th. Amount of Notes lodged ye act. May 1789 - £144,632.15.4¼ / Augt. 31…8,088.12.6¼ / [total] £152,721.7.10½.” It goes on to list Continental bills received in taxes, loans received from Samuel Huntington, Roger Sherman, Chauncey Whittlesey, Asher Miller, and others. The final entries all list payments made to soldiers in 1790 and 1791, among them Asa Rice, Charles Fanning, David Dorrance, Obediah Blakesley, and Peleg Sanford.
