Description:

Morse Samuel

Bi-fold letter, penned to the recto of the first page, balance of pages blank and docketed to the final page, 8" x 10"; "N.Y. City University", Dated "March 7, 1838", and signed by Samuel Morse as "Sam F.B. Morse". Accompanied by two drawings of profiles in pencil on a single sheet, 7.5" x 4.25", which is affixed to a slightly larger sheet of blue paper torn from a ledger.  The drawing is unsigned, and we can only make an attribution to Morse based on a clipped description stating that the letter was accompanied by two sketches of heads by Morse. (The description states that the sketches are on two sheets, but a notation on the letter states that there is only one sheet.). Letter has expected folds, with partial separations along folds. Light soiling, with paper loss on integral cover where the wax seal has been cut out. Mounting remnants and small rust stain on docket page.

A brief letter to Joseph Boyd possibly complying with a request for his autograph:

"Your request of the 15th Jany reached me on my return from Washington this day, and I presume this will be considered as a compliance with it.

A lovely rare autograph by Samuel Morse.
