Description:

Samuel Burch ALS to Georgia Gov on Behalf of Three Rev War Veterans

An autograph letter signed "Samuel Burch" and addressed to Georgia Governor Wilson Lumpkin, concerning three Revolutionary War veterans who are owed compensation for their service. 3pp of a bifolium, measuring 8" x 10", Washington, D.C., dated March 9, 1834. With docketing on verso. The letter has flattened mail folds, with light toning at the folds and minor soiling throughout. A few small holes at the cross folds, not affecting any text. Boldly signed.

In part:

"…Samuel Elbert was either a colonel or a Brigadier General, Philip Lowe, a major and Christopher Hilleary, a Lieutenant, in the Georgia line of the Revolutionary Army. These officers served to the end of the war, and each became entitled to five years full pay, under the resolution of Congress of the 22d March 1783…The heirs of each of those officers (who reside in & are citizens of Georgia) allege that their fathers did not receive their commutation; and have, for several years back, been applying to Congress for its payments…There is nothing in the Treasury to shew that either of those officers received their commutation, on the contrary, I have seen the Books, and they shew, so far as I can judge, that they did not receive it…Now the object of this communication is to ask you to have the goodness to cause an examination to be made to see if there is in your archives a complete list of the Georgia officers who received their commutation, and if there be, whether Col. Elbert, Major Lowe, and Lieut. Hilleary receiver theirs. If they did not, that their heirs, who are now residing in Georgia, ought to get it…"
