Salvatore "Sammy the Bull" Gravano was a notorious underboss of the Gambino crime family who became one of the most infamous mob turncoats in history. As a key figure in the New York Mafia during the 1980s, Gravano played a central role in the rise of John Gotti, helping orchestrate the assassination of former boss Paul Castellano. However, in 1991, facing a life sentence, he made the shocking decision to cooperate with the FBI, providing testimony that led to the conviction of Gotti and numerous other mobsters. His cooperation effectively dismantled parts of the Gambino family and dealt a significant blow to the American Mafia. In exchange, he received a reduced sentence and entered witness protection, though he later returned to crime, ultimately serving prison time for running an ecstasy drug ring. Despite his betrayal of the Mafia's code of silence, Gravano remains a controversial figure, admired by some for his candor and feared by others for his violent past.
