Description:

Sam Houston Two Intriguing Documents Re: Relations with Mexico

Two incomplete or draft letters, taken from an archive of Sam Houston's personal papers. The first letter, 2pp [incomplete], measuring 7.75" x 10", No place, undated, is from an unidentified writer (possibly to Houston) asking for the establishment of a mail route from Lynchburg to Galveston. Reading in part: "…Our mail from Galveston at this time crosses the Bay to [illegible] and thence up by Liberty, Smithfield, & [illegible] to Cold Sprint. Whenever there happens to be a weather at the time the mail should leave Galveston it does not start as it goes in little sail boats, and it is sometimes 3 weeks without our getting a Galveston mail. If a mail boat could be established from Lynchburg to Cold Spring we would always get our mail properly in 2 or 3 days…"

The second letter, 2pp, measuring 7.5" x 12", No place, undated, appears to be a draft of a letter addressed to an unnamed recipient, instructing them to discuss with Mexican authorities the negative impact of relations between the two countries over the issue of harsh punishment of U.S. citizens accused of breaking the law in Mexico. In part: "You will avail yourself of the opportunity of making to that government the communication to suggest that, while this government is well disposed to maintain with strict fidelity amicable relations with the Mexican Republic and will not attempt to screen from merited furnishment any of our citizens who may be guilty of an infraction…yet that summary, sanguinary or undue furnishment of either Texans or citizens of the United States in Mexico inevitably tends to excite and ferment in this country an acerbity of feeling against Mexico…"

The documents have usual folds, with toning throughout. Areas of minor loss of paper due to fire damage, with minor loss of some text. This archive was part of Houston's personal papers, and was purchased at auction from Heritage Auctions in March 2017, Lot #51090.
