Sam Houston Signed Texas Treasury Warrant "for Protection of the frontier"

Sam Houston signed Texas Treasury Warrant displayed behind glass in a handsome two-sided frame providing a peekaboo view verso. The warrant, at right, is displayed beside an oval print of Sam Houston at left. The sight size of the warrant measures 7.75" x 3.125" while the overall frame size is 18.25" x 10.375". Not examined out of frame. Accompanied by an original catalog description - certificate of authenticity from the Kenneth W. Rendell Gallery, Inc. (New York, New York and Beverly Hills, California.)

The partly printed and partly handwritten warrant, numbered 433, is in the amount of $76.87 payable to John M. Ingram "for Protection of the frontier…this amount being for services rendered in Capt. Herron's Comp'y." Dated July 27, 1860 and signed in Austin, Texas by Texas Governor Sam Houston as "Sam Houston"; 2x signed by Texas Comptroller Clement R. Johns as "Clement R. Johns" (one struck through); signed by Texas Treasurer Cyrus H. Randolph as "C.H. Randolph"; and signed by warrant recipient John M. Ingram as "John. M. Ingram." In near fine condition, with expected light folds and wrinkles. A piece of residual tape at top. Minor bleed through in upper left corner recto does not affect Houston's signature.

John M. Ingram was paid for military service performed along the Texas-Mexico frontier. The Rio Grande River Valley was the site of frequent border conflicts as Texans competed against Indians and Mexicans for land, resources, and supremacy. The 1st Cortina War, for instance, waged intermittently between 1859-1861, pitched a Mexican rancher's guerillas against the U.S. Army, Confederate Army, Texas Rangers, and local militias around Brownsville, Texas.

Governor Sam Houston authorized this payment seven months into his term as Texas governor, and while he was still lobbying to become the Republican Party's official presidential candidate.  A lack of national support, as well as the party's reluctance to name an official Vice Presidential candidate, led Houston to withdraw from the presidential race less than a month later in mid-August 1860. (Abraham Lincoln would later win that race.)

Sam Houston (1793-1863) was one of the champions of the Texan independence movement. He signed the Texas Declaration of Independence in March 1836 and routed Santa Ana’s forces in an almost bloodless 18-minute-long battle at San Jacinto about one month later. Houston later served as president of the Republic of Texas, a state senator, and finally governor.
