Description:

Houston Sam

David Hume, The History of England from the Invasion of Julius Ceasar to the Revolution in 1688. (New York: Inskeep & Bradford & Boston: William McIlhenney, 1810) Vol. 4, vi, 567 pages, 8vo, bound in contemporary marbled boards with gilt-titled spine. Boldly signed, "Sam Houston" on the front free endpaper, and again with his initials "S.H." on the front pastedown together with the signature of the previous owner, Tennessee judge John W. Overton (1766-1833), "John W. Overton" on the top of the front free endpaper with his bookplate affixed to the front pastedown. Signature page and several endpapers moderately toned and dampstained, expertly restored and rebound with the original leather boards and new spine which retains the original spine label. Housed in a beautiful custom clamshell case in red, white and blue with the seal of the Republic of Texas stamped in gilt and a ribbed, gilt-titled spine.

The present volume covers the period 1547-1603, a period dominated by the reign of Elizabeth. Her reign marked the beginning of England's rise to the penultimate world power by the mid-eighteenth century. Houston must have found the story of the English defeat of the Spanish Armada inspirational, especially following Texas' seemingly unlikely victory over the more numerous and powerful Mexican army in the 1830s.

The previous owner of the volume, John W. Overton, was a Tennessee plantation owner and judge, as well as an advisor to Andrew Jackson. In 1818, Houston lived in Nashville where he took a position as a local prosecutor. It appears that Overton obtained this volume the same year, and sometime prior to Houston's departure for Texas in 1832, gave it to Houston.

Books owned by Houston are extremely rare.We are aware of only two other volumes signed and owned by Houston ever to appear in the market in the last 30 years, one of which fetched $35,000.
