[Sam Houston] Four ALS Addressed to Houston Requesting an Autograph

A collection of four period letters, addressed to Sam Houston, all dating from early 1854 when Houston was serving as a Texas Senator. All of the letters request an autograph from the famed general and ex-President of the Republic of Texas. The collection includes the following:

1p of a bifolium, measuring 5" x 7.5", Williamstown, Massachusetts, dated February 10, 1854. A letter from Samuel Williams to Houston.

1p of the bifolium, measuring 5.125" x 8", Ashland Hall, West Bloomfield, New Jersey, dated February 22, 1854. A letter from Carnot B. Meeker to Houston. Carnot Bolton Meeker (1836-1911), a New Jersey farmer and politician who served in the Union Army during the Civil War, was a student at Ashland Hall, a college preparatory school, at the time he wrote this letter.

1p of a bifolium, measuring 5" x 7.5", Syracuse, New York, dated February 17, 1854. A letter from S. Harrison Pheney to Houston.

This archive was part of Houston's personal papers and was purchased at auction from Heritage Auctions in March 2017, Lot #51090. All of the letters have expected mail folds, with minor soiling and toning. Some minor loss of paper due to fire damage. A few areas of water stains.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.

We insure through Berkley Asset Protection with rates of $.70 per $100 of value, among the lowest insurance rates in the industry. Our shipping department cameras document every package, both outgoing and incoming, for maximum security. In addition, we compare our shipping and handling rates against those of other auction houses, to ensure that our charges are among the lowest in the trade.

International shipments: In order to comply with our insurance provider, all international shipments will be sent via Fed Ex and customs paperwork will show a value of $1.00. International buyers should contact our office directly with any questions regarding this policy.
